Communications OSCE

  • 10 station Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) focused on communication challenges and using standardized patients (SPs) to assess students' communication competencies
  • Pre-and Post-Test with Comparison Group design adjusts for baseline differences among individuals and permits isolation of the impact of the new training compared with traditional clerkships
  • Uniform training approach was implemented to "standardize" the standardized patients' portrayal of the cases and rating of the students across OSCE sessions and administrations
  • Assessment of standardization underway based on assessing the case portrayal of SPs (case content, timing, and emotional intensity) and conducting independent ratings of students' communication skills using a sample of video- and audio-taped encounters
